If you are looking for scary Minecraft shaders, you need to check out Spooklementary Shaders by SpacEagle17. This creator has come up with some great creations before, such as Overimagined shaders, which are now a feature of Complementary Reimagined shaders. With Spooklementary shaders, we just got the perfect shaderpack for any horror map.
Think of the ambience in a horror movie, or a scary game you’ve played. Now take a look at this shaderpack. Tell me it doesn’t tick almost all boxes. It adds a dense fog to Minecraft, whilst bringing the brightness in the game to a minimum. During daytime, the sun is just barely visible through the clouds. For that reason, it casts only very subtle shadows.
Playability with Spooklementary
We need to discuss playability. Can you still play Minecraft the way you’re used to when you enable Spooklementary shaders? The answer depends. Survival is going to be a real challenge, as you can’t see a thing during nighttime. Ironically, the higher quality monitor you got, the worse it’s going to be. Higher quality monitor usually have a wider range of colors, including darker blacks and brighter whites. Typically, that is what you’d want. With Spooklementary however, it will cause you to not be able to see a thing.
This doesn’t take away the fact that this is a wonderful shaderpack. Based on EminGT’s Complementary Reimagined shaders, it applies neat effects to turn Minecraft into a horror game. Dark skies, flickering lights, sudden screen shakes and even blood moons. And that’s just a handful of things you can expect. SpacEagle17 has already gone ahead and released a second version of the pack, adding even more spooky features.
Attention to detail
What stands out with these spooky shaders, is the attention to small details. For example, red flowers will light up during blood moons, giving your world an eerie feel. Roses and poppies are emissive during blood moons. With other light sources feeling less reliable due to their constant flickering, you’re lucky to survive the night without getting spooked.
Oh, and did I tell you about the eyes? Yes, the eyes. I call them that. In the list of shader features, this is probably included under “Very rarely strange things happen”. I’m not joking! They look like herobrine eyes, and they appear out of nothing. I think I even saw herobrine, but then he disappeared again. Just to be sure, I haven’t touched that world ever since…
