Complementary Shaders 1.20.2 or Complementary Shaders Unbound by EminGTR is a very popular BSL Shaders edit. The shaders have over a million downloads and are up-to-date with Minecraft 1.20 and older versions. If you’re interested in finding more shaders, check out all shaderpacks that are up-to-date with Minecraft 1.20.2.
With these shaders, the goal is to both make Minecraft look good and get the shaders as well-optimized as possible. Despite great optimization, most players don’t consider Complementary Shaders low end shaders, so in-game FPS with this shaderpack will be significantly lower when compared to Vanilla Minecraft. Curious how these shaders stack up against good old vanilla Minecraft? Check out the direct comparison below:
Complementary Shaders 1.20.2 is the latest version of the shaderpack. While the pack has not been around for as long as BSL Shaders themselves, they have been available for download for a few years now.
Complementary Resources
Previously, the installation process for this shaderpack was rather complex, because it comes with a dedicated resource pack. This resource pack, fittingly called Complementary Resources, used to be a separate resource pack that players would need to download and install with the shaders.
With the latest update, that is no longer the case. The textures are now embedded in the shaderpack, meaning you don’t have to install them separately. Complementary Resources are textures that supply the shaderpack with PBR information. PBR stands for Physically Based Rendering, which adds properties to textures, such as their roughness or emissivity. See below comparison, to see the effect of the included textures on the reflections on metallic blocks.
Another great feature of the Complementary Resources is the addition of emissive textures. This does not only look good on some blocks, but also makes ores a little easier to spot in the dark, as the veins will now light up and give off a literal “glow in the dark”.
BSL Edit
As mentioned earlier, these shaders are a BSL Shaders edit. Apart from demonstrating the purpose of Complementary Resources, the above comparison also highlights some differences between the original BSL Shaders and this shaderpack.
The overall styling of the packs, especially with their respective default settings, shows some clear differences as well a few resemblances.
One of the key differences between the packs is the overall coloring in the shaders. BSL Shaders appear to render fainter but brighter colors, whereas Complementary Shaders provide more contrast. It’s got darker shades and brighter highlights, but lower overall brightness. Both shaders look great, nonetheless.
